ESPN reports that Ryan Church and Yunel Escobar will sit out tonight’s game after a violent collision at second base last night. Omar Infante will start at short for the Braves, Endy Chavez will start in right field for the Mets.
Good news, though, as a CAT scan administered to Church came up normal today. It seems that Escobar, too, will not sit out for very long.
“I’d do it all over again,” Church said of his slide. “I was trying to break the double play up.”
Braves manager Bobby Cox said Escobar “is going to be fine.”

Gotta feel terrible for Pedro Martinez. He was about to return to the Mets’ rotation but must now return home to care for his ailing father, who is sick with brain cancer and has recently taken a turn for the worse.
“He can’t take any more chemo. We’re letting him have a nice end of his life. The chemo is not going to help him. If they give him the chemo that might be it,” he told the newspaper for Tuesday’s report. “They told me there’s nothing we can do. He’s eventually going to deteriorate,” Pedro said.

Congratulations to Dan Uggla, the first ever back-to-back Beast of the Week winner. This guy is putting the Marlins on his back. As long as Uggla continues to play so well, expect the Marlins to be competitive.
And a pat on the back to Aaron Heilman for being the most efficient Least of the Week in NL Beast history. Aaron was able to clinch the award with only 1/3 of an inning of work. Way to go, Aaron!

Brad Lidge is 11/11 in save opportunities this season. In 20 innings pitched, he has let in only 3 runs and only 1 earned run. His K/BB ratio is 23/10, his ERA is 0.45 and his WHIP is 0.95. Will this last? No one knows, but Lidge looks confident and is dominant in almost every appearance. He goes right after batters with his fastball and slider, and he doesn’t let base runners get to his psyche. I’d expect the Phillies to make a play to extend the right-hander in the next couple months.

According to Adam Rubin, the Mets are shopping RHP Aaron Heilman, and are looking to acquire a set-up man in return. MLB Trade Rumors lists Jon Rauch, David Weathers, Damaso Marte, and John Grabow as possible trade candidates.
While other teams may value Heilman as a starter, it’s hard to believe that he has any trade value at present. If Omar can pull off a miracle and get anything in return for Heilman, that would be phenomenal. It’s time for the Mets to cut ties with Heilman regardless; it’s an unfortunate situation, but it’s the prudent thing to do.

Mets RF Ryan Church was diagnosed with a concussion after this nasty collision with Braves SS Yunel Escobar in the last inning of last night’s Mets-Braves game, the second part of a doubleheader that the Mets lost 6-2. As the video says, this is Church’s second concussion this year, which is reason for concern. No word yet on how long either Church or Escobar will be out. Obviously, for the Mets, this is not good news, as Church has really been the team’s most valuable player so far this season.
