Nationals Park gastronomics [desert time]
May 16, 2008 · No Comments
I always love in Europe when they say gastronomics - I think it means food. Anyways, DCist did a nice little post on the desert options at Nationals Park.
When the concession stand line up at Nationals Park was announced in late February, fans rejoiced knowing that, regardless of the game’s outcome, they’d leave the new stadium having enjoyed some classic D.C.-area good eats. The arrival of Ben’s Chili Bowl, Cantina Marina, Hard Times, and Five Guys have given us plenty of combinations to douse our half-smokes and fries in chili and queso. But, for those of us with a sweet tooth, the dessert options have given new life to the tired pre-packaged cotton candy and Dippin’ Dots norm at RFK.

State of the Mets
May 16, 2008 · No Comments
Every Mets blog seems to be publishing a novel today on the State of the Mets, so why not add my two cents. I understand that we just lost 3 of 4 at home to Washington (so much for that 5 for 7 in the homestand) and that we’re going in the Bronx as a .500 team, but all is not lost here. Sure, this was a hiccup. Sure, this was a missed opportunity. Sure, we’re in third place right now, 2.5 games behind the Marlins of all teams, but come on, all is not lost here. It’s only May. I understand that at some point the “it’s only [insert month here]” mantra turns into “yeah, but when are we going to start playing well,” but this team has nowhere to go but up at this point.

Giambi’s Golden Thong
May 16, 2008 · No Comments
Just a fun fact to get everyone ready for this weekend’s Subway Series:
According to the Daily News, Yankees 1B Jason Giambi wears a golden thong when he is in a slump.
Yankee slugger Jason Giambi wears a gold lamé, tiger-stripe thong under his uniform when he wants to break out of a slump - and he shares it with hitless teammates who want to get back on track.
Apparently, he is not alone; Giambi shares his man-thong with the rest of the Yankees.
Over the years, the 37-year-old All-Star has left the “golden thong” in the lockers of slumping teammates Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Johnny Damon, Robin Ventura and Robinson Cano.
“All of them wore it and got hits,” he reports. “The thong works every time.”

Postgame: Phillies 5 - Braves 0 [BEAST-OFF]

Cole Hamels is a monster. 9 innings, 4 hits, 6 strikeouts, 3 walks, no runs. He had 120 pitches, with 85 of them being strikes. This was Hamels’ fifth win of the season, and his first career complete game shutout. Finally, Hamels pitches a game this season without having that one tough inning, especially early.
Hamels got run support too, which can sometimes be tough for him as the team seems to relax when he’s on the mound. Pedro Feliz, Ryan Howard, and Shane Victorino all homered. Howard is back. There, I’ve said it. I almost think he likes having to prove everybody wrong year after year. All the homers came off of Braves pitcher Chuck James. Pedro Feliz added another RBI in the third, scoring Pat Burrell on a single to left.
In a way, this was a statement win for the Phils. Hamels went the distance, dominating batters throughout; Ryan Howard continued his mini-hot streak; and the team took two of three from a division rival. That can never be underestimated. And on the same day, the Mets lost a tough 1-0 game to the Nats, losing three of four to Leasts of the East. The Mets are reeling. Now if only the Marlins would start to mail it in….
