Mets Midgame: 4/25 vs. ATL

April 25, 2008 · No Comments

10:16: On a season low 2 hits, Raul Casanova grounds out to Mark Teixiera to end this miserable game. The remaining 900 fans at Shea all boo.

10:12: STOP THE PRESSES. Carlos Delgado strikes out swinging in the 9th.

9:54: Two terrible stats: David Wright is 0 for his last 17 at bats and the Mets have managed only 2 singles tonight. Come on guys, this is ridiculous.

9:45: This lineup has so many dead ends. 2 men on for Castillo and he pops up to the third baseman. Way to kill a rally.

9:32: Kelly Johnson singles in an RBI off Pedro Feliciano, his 4th of the night. Kelly Johnson and Felipe Lopez, we’re just making these guys look like stars aren’t we?

9:00: Mike Pelfrey just served up a 2 run shot to Kelly Johnson and is headed out after 6.2…sound familiar?

According to Gary Cohen on SNY we’ve been out-homered 24-12 this season. Honestly, that’s not acceptable for a team competing with the Phillies.

Adios, Ray King

April 25, 2008 · No Comments

NL Beast’s favorite Nationals reliever, Ray King (who we call Big Boy), was sent down to AAA Columbus yesterday after, ahem, underperforming. In fact, King was pretty awful, with a 5.68 ERA this year so far. Called up in his place was lefthander Mike O’Connor, who rejoins the Nats after coming off of elbow surgery in 2006. We’re happy to see the hometown O’Connor (played for the GW Colonials) make it back to the big leagues, albeit as a long reliever, but will forever hold a spot in our hearts for Big Boy.

Man or machine?

April 25, 2008 · No Comments

From today’s Inquirer

“He’s a man that is a machine,” pitcher Brett Myers said.

“Can’t he be both?” fellow hurler Adam Eaton asked. “It’s an open interpretation.”

“Both,” catcher Chris Coste said. “He’s the perfect mix of both.”

Like the Six Million Dollar Man?

“Fourteen,” Coste said. “He’s the Fourteen Million Dollar Man. And if he keeps up this pace, it’ll be a hell of a lot more than that.”

MetsBlog goes to Philly

April 25, 2008 · No Comments

Here’s a great video of Matt Cerone and Ted Berg from MetsBlog going to Philly to see the Mets play at CBP. Very well done, and it makes a good point, why can’t we just all get along?

Mets Postgame: 4/24 at Nationals

April 25, 2008 · No Comments

The Mets looked to make it 2 in a row for a short series sweep at beautiful Nationals Park in DC, but would come up shorthanded, losing 10-5 as Oliver Perez couldn’t finish the job and the bullpen, once again, blew it for the Amazins. Perez was never dominant, walking 4 and striking out three on 100 pitches over 5.2. He was pulled in favor of…Aaron Heilman, who promptly loaded the bases and served up a grand slam to Felipe Lopez (who had a whopping 6 RBIs on the night, the first and last time that ever happens). Jorge Sosa also let up a couple (what else is new) to improve his ERA to 7.36. Offensively, Carlos Beltran and Marlon Anderson hit solo shots with Ryan Church, Luis Castillo and Perez contributing an RBI each.

This was our game to lose…and we did. Perez pitched well enough, and the Mets were crusing into the fifth. But it’s unacceptable to score only five runs against the Nationals. This team may have the bulk of its worries in the bullpen right now, but it’s starting to scare me a lot that the big time guys aren’t hitting. Reyes doesn’t look composed at the plate, Beltran is (finally) just starting to hit, and keep in mind we’re missing Alou’s bat (plus Schneider last night). And then there’s Delgado. I watched him take BP the other day, and even there, he looked off, with his bat speed clearly way off.

One more thing…I know that Willie was probably trying to give Aaron some confidence by putting him in for the last out of the 6th, but I was shocked to see Heilman and not Joe Smith or Duaner Sanchez in that spot. And then to give up and put Sosa in for mop up duty after the grand slam was just absurd seeing as we were playing against one of the worst bullpens in baseball.

What a frustrating night.

Introducing Myself

April 25, 2008 · No Comments

I just couldn’t hold out any longer, it was time to get a blog.

My name is Jonathan Kraft, and I’m a diehard Mets fan. The Mets haven’t won the World Series since I was less than a year old, but I’m sort of hopeful they’ll win again at some point in my lifetime.

There are plenty of Mets blogs out there, so why start another? The simple answer is that this blog is unique. This is not a Mets blog, Phillies blog, Nationals blog, Marlins blog, or Braves blog. NL Beast blogs about each of these teams, but from a broader perspective, taking all of baseball into account. Eventually, we’ll have a blogger for each division team. For now, we’ll make do with myself blogging about the Mets, Greg blogging about the Phillies, and a soon to be named other blogger writing about the Nationals.

Enjoy and please feel free to comment on anything and everything.
